What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL) ?
The reality is that educators have been teaching and reinforcing SEL skills for centuries. It is how they have always managed and maintained order in their classroom – “stay in line” … “raise your hand” … “do your own work” … “be on time” … “be respectful,”
In recent years, many schools and school districts have begun to explore and implement SEL programs as a means of addressing more than just the academic needs of their students. Public policy and research organizations have repeatedly validated the benefits of quality SEL programs. In this context, consensus definitions of SEL have begun to emerge.
Every educator desires to see their students succeed in life. Sure, they want them to learn to read and write, to understand math, and ultimately to graduate. But more than that, educators want to see their students go on and complete whatever advanced education they decide to pursue, get a quality job, get and keep a home, and have friendships that last a lifetime.
To most educators and parents, it is more than reasonable to conclude that children and adolescents who have strong social and emotional skills will perform better in school, will have healthy relationships with both adults, peers and will be emotionally strong and healthy.
The development of these skills begins at an early age and continues throughout childhood and into adolescence and even adulthood. They are influenced by their home environment, their relationships, and their social circles. Schools provide a major component of a child’s social and emotional development whether that is intentional or by default.

Leaps takes the broad concepts of social and emotional health and brings a practical implementation of SEL to the table with very specific, easily identifiable skills.
For some reason when people talk about behaviors and behavior programming at school, there is an automatic default to exceptional and alternative education. It is as if the word behavior is a pejorative that means “anywhere but the classroom”. But what is really interesting is that, while behavior solutions, behavior programming and behavior modification are getting relegated to the specialties within the educational array, we are seeing a mainstreaming of social and emotional learning (SEL).
Kids who get in trouble do so again and again. Why is it that the same kids seem to always be in trouble no matter what is tried? Schools have ISS, alternative schools, codes of conduct contracts, and so on. When I went to school we had Coach Velasquez and his paddle. That didn’t work either.
One of the real issues facing schools today is the readiness of kids to begin. Are little ones ready for Kindergarten? If not, is Pre-K the answer? What should the focus of Pre-K be? Is it academic readiness or is it social preparation? Can you mix the two? How do you know which is the more pressing need?
